An arm lift trades loose skin for a permanent scar that runs along the inner arm. That trade off is the whole decision.
Quick answer

Is it worth going to Costa Rica?

An arm lift in Costa Rica commonly costs from about 3,500 US dollars, often 40 to 60 percent below typical US pricing. Costa Rica is an established cosmetic surgery destination with many surgeons trained internationally and registered with the national medical college, and it sits close to North America with short direct flights. The catch is that a full arm lift leaves a long scar along the inner arm and needs real recovery before you fly.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed April 2025, and vary by whether it is a mini or full arm lift, whether liposuction is combined, the surgeon, and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it really costs here

The price in Costa Rica, honestly.

In Costa Rica an arm lift commonly runs from about 3,500 to 5,500 US dollars, which is roughly £2,800 to £4,300. Many clinics quote an all in package. Price is driven by whether it is a mini or full brachioplasty, whether liposuction is added, and the surgeon and facility.

Indicative ranges, reviewed April 2025. Not a quote. Because Costa Rica prices in US dollars, exchange surprises are unlikely, but always confirm the full inclusions. A price far below the market can signal a less experienced surgeon.

The realistic experience

The trip, recovery and the follow up problem.

Costa Rica is close to North America, but an arm lift still needs real recovery before you fly. Long haul or even medium haul flights soon after surgery raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis, and swelling makes the arms tender. Expect a compression garment for weeks and a scar that fades slowly over months.

01

Days 1 to 3

Surgery is usually under general or heavy sedation. Expect soreness, bruising and swelling in the arms and a fitted compression garment worn almost constantly. Lifting and reaching are limited.

02

Week 1 to 2

Swelling and bruising start to ease. Gentle walking lowers clot risk. Wound checks and a review usually happen in this window before you travel.

03

Day 7 to 14

Surgeons commonly advise waiting one to two weeks before flying. Confirm your own clearance to fly directly with the operating surgeon.

04

3 to 6 months

Swelling settles and the scar begins to soften and fade. A scar takes a year or more to mature, and it never disappears entirely.

The follow up problem

Once you are home, a wound that opens, a thickened scar or a small revision is hard to manage from abroad, and local surgeons are often reluctant to take on another clinic's work. Agree before you travel how reviews and any revision are handled.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic surgery or its complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

The risks of travelling here

What can go wrong.

An arm lift is a common body contouring operation, but it is real surgery with a permanent scar, and travel adds its own risks. Understand these before you commit.

A long, permanent scar

A full arm lift leaves a scar that runs from the elbow toward the armpit. It usually fades but never disappears, and some people scar more visibly than others. This is the trade off, not a complication.

Clots from flying after surgery

Surgery and flights both raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Allow real recovery time and get written clearance to fly, even though Costa Rica is a shorter trip from North America.

Wound healing and infection

The inner arm incision can be slow to heal, and wounds can open or become infected, sometimes after you are home. Smoking and diabetes raise this risk.

Nerve and sensation changes

Numbness or altered sensation along the arm is common early on and usually improves, but a small area of lasting numbness can remain.

Asymmetry and revision

Mild differences between the two arms, fluid collections or a thickened scar can need a touch up. No honest surgeon promises a perfectly even result.

How to choose safely in Costa Rica

Five questions before you pay.

We do not name clinics. Use these to judge any clinic in Costa Rica you are sent to, and treat vague answers, pressure to book, and prices far below the market as the warning signs that matter most.

1
Is the surgeon a board certified plastic surgeon?
Ask whether the surgeon is registered with the Costa Rican College of Physicians and Surgeons and certified in plastic surgery, ideally with membership of the national plastic surgery association. Verify the registration directly.
2
Will it be a mini or a full arm lift, and where will the scar sit?
A good surgeon explains the scar honestly, shows you where it will run, and matches the technique to how much loose skin you actually have.
3
Is the facility properly equipped and accredited?
An arm lift belongs in a licensed surgical facility with anaesthetic support and monitoring. Ask about the hospital or surgical centre, and any international accreditation it holds.
4
Who gives the anaesthetic, and what monitoring is there?
A qualified anaesthetist and full monitoring matter even for body contouring. Confirm this is included in the quoted package.
5
What does the package include, and what about home follow up?
Get the inclusions, garment, reviews and revision terms in writing, including who pays and how a revision works once you are back home.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is an arm lift in Costa Rica safe?

At a licensed surgical facility where a board certified plastic surgeon operates with proper anaesthetic support, it can be safe and the results good. Risk rises with poor wound healing and flying home too soon. This page helps you tell a careful clinic from a risky one.

Will the scar be very visible?

A full arm lift leaves a scar along the inner arm that is noticeable at first and fades over a year or more. A mini arm lift uses a shorter scar but treats less skin. How you heal is partly down to your own skin, so no surgeon can promise an invisible result.

How long should I stay in Costa Rica after surgery?

Plan for roughly one to two weeks. Even though flights to North America are short, surgeons commonly advise waiting before you fly because of clot risk and wound healing. Confirm your own clearance with the operating surgeon.

Is it cheaper because the quality is lower?

Mostly the saving reflects lower labour and facility costs and a competitive medical travel market, not lower quality by default. Costa Rica prices in US dollars, so quotes are easy to compare, but a price far below the market can still be a warning sign.

Does the price really include everything?

Often packages cover theatre, labs, garment and reviews, and sometimes recovery lodging, but inclusions vary. Always confirm in writing exactly what is and is not covered before you book.
