The one honest thing
A body lift is one of the largest cosmetic operations, with a real complication rate and a long recovery. It is the procedure to think hardest about travelling for.
Quick answer

Is it worth going to Colombia?

A body lift in Colombia, a major operation that removes excess skin around the lower body after large weight loss, commonly costs from about £6,500, often a half to two thirds of UK or US pricing for comparable work. Colombia has a large, established body contouring sector in Medellin, Bogota, Cali and Cartagena. But this is among the biggest cosmetic operations, with a genuine complication rate, a long scar, and a recovery measured in weeks, so the travel itself is the real cost.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed September 2025, and vary by how many zones are lifted, whether it is a lower body or full body lift, the surgeon and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it really costs here

The price in Colombia, honestly.

In Colombia a circumferential lower body lift, which addresses the abdomen, hips, back and often the buttocks and outer thighs, typically runs from about £6,500 to £11,000, which is roughly $8,000 to $13,500. A full or extended body lift that adds more zones costs more. Price is driven by how much is done in one operation, the surgeon and facility, and the recovery care included.

Indicative ranges, reviewed September 2025. Not a quote. A price far below the rest of the market often means a less experienced surgeon, a non accredited theatre, or too much surgery attempted in a single sitting.

The realistic experience

The trip, recovery and the follow up problem.

A body lift is firmly not a fly in, fly out procedure. It is major surgery with drains, a long incision, and a recovery that often needs several weeks before a long flight is safe. Plan a longer stay in Colombia than for smaller procedures, expect a compression garment and limited movement, and accept that the final shape settles over many months.

01

Days 1 to 5

Surgery is under general anaesthetic and often needs a hospital stay. Expect drains, significant soreness, and a compression garment worn almost constantly.

02

Week 1 to 3

Drains come out as output falls, and movement slowly returns. Many people stay in a recovery home with nursing support through this demanding stage.

03

Week 2 to 4

A long flight is often discouraged until the surgeon is satisfied healing is on track. Confirm your own clearance to fly directly with the operating surgeon.

04

3 to 12 months

Swelling settles, the contour refines, and the long scar slowly fades. Full recovery and final scar quality take the better part of a year.

The follow up problem

Because a body lift has a real rate of wound and healing problems, the follow up matters more here than for smaller procedures. Once you are home, a wound that opens, a fluid collection, or an infection is hard to manage from another country, and local surgeons are often reluctant to take on another clinic's work. Agree before you travel exactly how drains, reviews, wound care, and any revision will be handled.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic surgery or its complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

The risks of travelling here

What can go wrong.

A body lift carries higher complication rates than most cosmetic procedures because of the size of the operation. Travelling for it adds risk on top. Understand these before you commit.

Wound healing problems

Because the incision is long and under tension, wound separation, delayed healing and fluid collections are among the more common issues, and they often surface after you have flown home.

Clots from major surgery and flying

Long operations and long flights both raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The combination is why a body lift needs more recovery time before travel, not less.

Too much surgery at once

Combining a body lift with other procedures in one sitting lengthens anaesthesia and raises risk. A safe surgeon may stage the work rather than do everything in a single operation.

A very high volume market

Colombia performs a large number of cosmetic procedures, and demand has drawn in some operators who cut corners. Reputable surgeons are registered with the Colombian authorities and many belong to the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugia Plastica. Verify registration rather than trusting social media.

A long scar and no guaranteed result

A body lift leaves a long, permanent scar that can sit low around the body. Asymmetry, scar widening and the need for revision are possible, and no honest surgeon promises a perfect contour.

How to choose safely in Colombia

Five questions before you pay.

We do not name clinics. Use these to judge any clinic in Colombia you are sent to, and treat vague answers, pressure to book, and prices far below the market as the warning signs that matter most.

1
Is the surgeon a registered plastic surgeon?
Ask for registration with the Colombian authorities and specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, with real experience in body lift surgery after weight loss. Membership of the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugia Plastica is a useful sign.
2
Is the hospital accredited for major surgery?
A body lift needs a fully equipped hospital with anaesthetic support and an overnight stay, not a day clinic. Ask which licensed hospital the surgery takes place in.
3
Will it be staged, and how long is the operation?
A careful surgeon limits how much is done in one sitting and may stage the work. Be wary of anyone promising to lift every zone and add other procedures in a single long operation.
4
What recovery care and how long should I stay?
Confirm nursing recovery care, drain management, and how many weeks the surgeon wants you to stay before flying. A short stay for a body lift is a red flag.
5
What happens if I need a revision at home?
Get the aftercare plan, wound care guidance, and any revision terms in writing, including who pays and how a revision works once you are back home.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is a body lift in Colombia safe?

At an accredited hospital where a registered plastic surgeon operates with full anaesthetic support and good recovery care, it can be safe and the results life changing. But a body lift has higher complication rates than smaller procedures, and risk rises with too much surgery at once, non accredited theatres, and flying home too soon. This page is here to help you tell a careful clinic from a risky one.

Why is it so much cheaper in Colombia?

Mostly lower labour, facility and overhead costs and a competitive market, not lower quality by default. A price far below the rest of the market, though, can signal a less experienced surgeon or an unsafe amount of surgery in one sitting.

How long should I stay in Colombia after surgery?

Longer than for smaller procedures, often two to four weeks, because of the size of the operation, the drains, and the clot risk of a long flight. Always confirm your own clearance to fly with the operating surgeon.

Who is a body lift for?

It is usually for people left with significant loose skin after major weight loss, whose weight has been stable. It removes skin rather than fat, and being at a steady weight and in good health first lowers the risk and improves the result.

When will I see the final result?

Swelling settles over months and the long scar fades over the better part of a year. The new shape is visible early, but final scar quality and contour take much longer to judge.
