Quick answer

Is it worth going to India?

A body lift in India commonly costs from about £1,400, often a fraction of UK or US pricing for comparable work. India has long established cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and a large pool of qualified plastic surgeons, and at a clinic where a board accredited surgeon operates in an accredited hospital, outcomes can be very good. The real cost is the surgery itself, because a body lift is one of the largest contouring operations, with extensive scars and weeks of recovery before a long flight home.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed July 2025, and vary by how many zones are lifted, whether it is a lower body lift or a fuller circumferential procedure, the technique, and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it is

The procedure, in plain terms.

A body lift removes loose, sagging skin and excess soft tissue and tightens the underlying support, usually after major weight loss or pregnancy. A lower body lift addresses the tummy, hips, outer thighs and buttocks in one circumferential operation, often with a scar that runs around the waistline. A fuller body lift can also address the upper body. It is reconstructive in spirit even when done for cosmetic reasons, and it leaves permanent scars in exchange for a smoother contour.

Who it tends to suit. People whose weight has been stable for a year or more, often after large weight loss or bariatric surgery, who are in good general health, who do not smoke, and who accept long scars as the trade for removing the loose skin.

Who it tends not to suit. People still actively losing or gaining weight, smokers who will not stop, anyone with poorly controlled diabetes or heart or clotting problems, and anyone expecting a scar free result. Because it is major surgery with a long recovery, it is a poor fit for a short trip.

What it really costs here

The price in India, honestly.

In India a body lift typically runs from about ₹1,50,000 to ₹6,00,000, which is roughly £1,400 to £5,700 or about 1,800 to 7,200 US dollars. Price is driven by how many zones are lifted, whether it is a lower body lift or a fuller circumferential procedure, how much liposuction is combined, the surgeon, and the facility.

Indicative ranges, reviewed July 2025. Not a quote. A price far below the rest of the market often means a less experienced surgeon, a non accredited theatre, or an unsafe attempt to do too much in one sitting.

Always confirm in writing what the price covers, which surgeon operates, what is staged versus combined, and the currency you are billed in. Home figures are indicative bands, not a fixed quote.

The realistic experience

The trip, recovery and the follow up problem.

A body lift is not a fly in, fly out procedure. It is one of the longest recoveries in cosmetic surgery, and long haul flights soon after raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Plan for a stay of several weeks, expect drains and a compression garment, and accept that scars take many months to fade.

01

Days 1 to 5

Surgery is under general anaesthetic and often needs a hospital stay. Expect drains, soreness, limited movement and a fitted compression garment worn almost constantly.

02

Week 1 to 3

Drains come out as output falls, swelling and bruising ease, and gentle walking is encouraged to lower clot risk. You move carefully and cannot stand fully upright at first.

03

Day 21 to 28

Many surgeons advise waiting at least three to four weeks before a long haul flight after surgery this large. Confirm your own clearance to fly directly with the operating surgeon.

04

3 to 12 months

Swelling settles, the contour refines and scars slowly mature and fade. Full return to heavy exercise can take a couple of months, and scar care continues for a year.

The follow up problem

Once you are home, a wound that opens, a fluid collection, or a scar healing badly is hard to manage from another country. Local surgeons are often reluctant to take on another clinic's work, so agree before you travel exactly how reviews, drain removal, and any revision will be handled.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic surgery or its complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

The risks of travelling here

What can go wrong.

A body lift is large surgery and its complication rate is higher than smaller cosmetic procedures, especially in people who have had major weight loss. Understand these before you commit.

Clots from flying after surgery

The single biggest travel specific danger. Major body contouring and long haul flights both raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Allow real recovery time and get written clearance to fly.

Wound healing problems

Long incisions can separate or be slow to heal, and the risk is higher in smokers and after major weight loss. This may surface days after you fly home, when help is far away.

Seroma, infection and bleeding

Fluid collections under the skin are common after a body lift and may need draining. Infection and bleeding are possible and can need a return to theatre.

Scars, asymmetry and numbness

The scars are long and permanent and can widen or thicken. Asymmetry, loose areas, and lasting numbness are possible, and a revision is sometimes wanted later.

No guaranteed contour

A body lift removes skin, it does not stop future weight change or guarantee a particular shape. No honest surgeon promises a specific result, and a touch up is sometimes needed.

How to choose safely in India

Five questions before you pay.

We do not name clinics. Use these to judge any clinic in India you are sent to, and treat vague answers, pressure to book, and prices far below the market as the warning signs that matter most.

1
Is the surgeon a qualified plastic surgeon?
Ask for the surgeon's qualifications, such as MCh or DNB in plastic surgery, and registration with the relevant State Medical Council. Membership of a recognised body such as the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India is a further sign.
2
Is the hospital accredited for major surgery?
Look for NABH accreditation, the Indian national standard, or JCI for larger hospitals. A body lift needs a full theatre, an inpatient bed, and proper anaesthetic and recovery support.
3
Is my weight stable and am I a safe candidate?
A careful surgeon checks that your weight has been steady, screens your general health and clotting risk, and may decline or stage the work. Be wary of anyone who skips this.
4
Who gives the anaesthetic, and what monitoring is there?
A qualified anaesthetist, full monitoring, and a plan to prevent clots matter for surgery of this size. Confirm these are included, not optional extras.
5
What happens if I need a review or revision at home?
Get the aftercare plan, scar care guidance, and any revision terms in writing, including who pays and how a revision works once you are back home.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is a body lift in India safe?

At an accredited hospital where a qualified plastic surgeon operates with proper anaesthetic and inpatient support, it can be safe and the results good. Risk rises with major weight loss history, smoking, non accredited theatres, and flying home too soon. This page is here to help you tell a careful clinic from a risky one.

Why is it so much cheaper in India?

Mostly lower labour, facility and overhead costs and a competitive market, not lower quality by default. A price far below the rest of the market, though, can signal a less experienced surgeon or an unsafe attempt to combine too much.

How long should I stay in India after surgery?

Plan for a stay of roughly three to four weeks. Many surgeons advise waiting at least that long before a long haul flight because of clot risk and wound healing. Always confirm your own clearance to fly with the operating surgeon.

Will the scars fade?

A body lift leaves long, permanent scars. They are usually placed where clothing hides them and tend to fade over six to twelve months or more, but they never disappear, and some people scar more than others.

Is a body lift the same as a tummy tuck?

No. A tummy tuck addresses the front of the abdomen, while a lower body lift treats the whole circumference, including the hips, outer thighs and buttocks. A body lift is larger surgery with a longer scar and recovery.
