Quick answer

Is it worth going to India?

Breast reduction in India commonly costs from about 950 pounds, often a fraction of UK private pricing for comparable work. India has internationally accredited hospitals and many plastic surgeons trained to a high standard, so at a properly accredited facility outcomes can be very good. The real cost is the travel, because reduction needs a longer recovery before a flight and a clear plan for follow up at home.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed December 2025, and vary by the surgeon, the facility, the complexity of your case, and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it really costs here

The price in India, honestly.

In India a breast reduction typically runs from about 950 to 2,900 pounds, which is roughly 100,000 to 300,000 rupees, with very large or complex reductions higher again. Price is driven by the size of the reduction, the surgeon, the hospital, and what is bundled in.

Indicative ranges, reviewed December 2025. Not a quote. A price far below the rest of the market often means a less experienced surgeon, a non accredited theatre, or aftercare you cannot verify.

Always confirm in writing what the price covers, which surgeon operates, how many nights of care are included, and the currency you are billed in. Home figures are indicative bands, not a fixed quote.

The realistic experience

The trip, recovery and the follow up problem.

Breast reduction is a longer operation than many cosmetic procedures and recovery takes time. Plan to stay in India for around ten days to two weeks, expect a support bra and limited arm use, and know that the final shape and the scars take months to settle.

01

Days 1 to 3

Surgery is under general anaesthetic, usually with one or two nights in hospital. Expect soreness, swelling, drains in some cases, and a surgical support bra worn around the clock.

02

Day 4 to 9

Discomfort eases and wound checks are done. Heavy lifting and raising the arms stay restricted, and you rest while the surgeon monitors healing.

03

Day 10 to 14

Many surgeons clear patients to fly in this window, but only after a wound check. Confirm your own clearance to fly directly with the operating surgeon.

04

3 to 6 months

Swelling settles, the breasts soften into shape, and scars begin to fade. Final results and scar maturity can take a year or more.

The follow up problem

A wound problem, delayed healing, or a scar concern is hard to manage from another country, and some local doctors are reluctant to take on another clinic's work. Keep your operative notes and agree before you travel exactly how reviews and any revision will be handled.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic surgery or its complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

The risks of travelling here

What can go wrong.

Breast reduction is common and generally safe in skilled hands, but it is real surgery and travelling for it adds its own risks. Understand these before you commit.

Clots from flying after surgery

Surgery under general anaesthetic and long haul flights both raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Allow real recovery time before you fly and get written clearance.

Permanent scars

Reduction leaves scars, often around the areola, down the breast, and in the fold beneath it. They fade over time but do not vanish, and some people scar more than others.

Changed sensation and breastfeeding

Nipple and skin sensation can change and may not fully return. The ability to breastfeed can be reduced or lost, which matters if you plan to have children.

Healing problems and wound breakdown

Delayed healing, wound breakdown, and partial loss of nipple tissue are possible, more so in smokers and at higher reductions. These may surface after you fly home.

Asymmetry and the need for revision

The two sides may not match perfectly and some people want a revision. Arranging that from abroad is harder and costlier than at home.

How to choose safely in India

Five questions before you pay.

We do not name clinics. Use these to judge any clinic in India you are sent to, and treat vague answers, pressure to book, and prices far below the market as the warning signs that matter most.

1
Is the surgeon a qualified plastic surgeon?
Ask whether the surgeon holds a recognised plastic surgery qualification such as MCh or DNB in plastic surgery, is registered with the National Medical Commission, and belongs to the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India. Verify directly, not just from a website.
2
Is the hospital accredited?
Look for NABH accreditation, the national hospital standard in India, and JCI at some larger hospitals. This is surgery that belongs in a properly equipped theatre with anaesthetic support.
3
Who gives the anaesthetic, and what monitoring is there?
A qualified anaesthetist and full monitoring matter for any procedure under sedation or general anaesthetic. Confirm this is included, not an optional extra.
4
Can I have my operative notes and a written plan?
Ask for the surgical plan, the named operating surgeon, and your operative notes afterwards. This matters for any future review or revision once you are home.
5
What happens if I need a review or revision at home?
Get the aftercare plan and any revision or guarantee terms in writing, including who pays and how a revision works once you are back in your own country.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is breast reduction in India safe?

At an accredited hospital where a qualified plastic surgeon operates with proper anaesthetic support, it can be safe and the results good. Risk rises with non accredited theatres and flying home too soon. This page is here to help you tell a careful clinic from a risky one.

Why is it cheaper than the UK?

Mostly lower labour, facility and overhead costs and a competitive market, not lower quality by default. A price far below the rest of the market, though, can signal a less experienced surgeon or a non accredited theatre.

How long should I stay in India?

Plan for roughly ten days to two weeks, because reduction needs a longer recovery before flying. Always confirm your own clearance to fly with the operating surgeon after a wound check.

Will I have visible scars?

Yes. Reduction leaves scars around the areola, down the breast, and in the fold beneath. They fade over months to a year but do not disappear, and some people scar more than others.

Could it affect breastfeeding?

It can. Reduction can reduce or remove the ability to breastfeed and can change nipple sensation. Raise this with the surgeon before surgery if you may want to breastfeed in future.
