IUI cost, country by country.

Quick answer

Is it worth going abroad?

IUI, where prepared sperm is placed directly into the womb, commonly costs about £800 to £1,800 per cycle privately in the UK, and more if donor sperm is used. Abroad, a cycle is often quoted from about €400 to €1,600 in Western Europe, and less in parts of central and eastern Europe. Because a single cycle is already relatively inexpensive and success per cycle is lower than IVF, the saving from travelling can be modest once flights and stays are added, so it is worth doing the full sums.

Indicative cost by country

The price, honestly.

IUI is a simpler treatment than IVF. Prepared sperm is placed into the womb around the time of ovulation, often with light monitoring or mild stimulation. The price reflects the monitoring, any medication, and whether donor sperm is used.

Because a single cycle is fairly cheap, travel and accommodation can cancel out much of the saving. Several cycles are often needed, so weigh the total against IVF as well.

What drives the price

Why two quotes differ.

Two IUI quotes can differ for honest reasons, and the saving is often smaller than it looks. Knowing what moves the price helps you compare fairly.

Monitoring and medication

Scans and any stimulation drugs add to a basic insemination fee. A very low price may cover the insemination alone.

Donor sperm

Using donor sperm raises the cost and adds screening and matching steps, and the rules differ by country.

Number of cycles

Success per cycle is lower than IVF, so several cycles are often needed. The cost that matters is the total, not one cycle.

Travel against saving

A single cycle is already inexpensive, so flights and stays can outweigh the saving. Run the full sums before deciding to travel.

Why abroad differs

Cheaper is not the same as worse.

Lower prices abroad reflect cost of living and competition, but IUI is already cheap, so travel eats into the saving fast.

Clinics abroad pay less for staff and overheads, and competition keeps prices down. The procedure itself is simple and broadly the same wherever it is done.

Because IUI is one of the cheaper fertility treatments, the proportional saving abroad is smaller than for IVF, and travel costs eat into it quickly.

IUI carries fewer risks than IVF, but mild stimulation can still cause a small risk of multiple pregnancy, and any cycle can fail, which carries an emotional cost.

The honest question is often whether IUI is the right treatment at all. For some diagnoses IVF gives a much better chance, so paying repeatedly for IUI abroad can cost more in the end.

A second opinion on the cost

Cheap per cycle is not the same as good value.

IUI can be cheaper abroad, but it is already one of the lower cost treatments, so the saving on a single cycle is often modest once you add travel. The danger is repeating cycles with a low chance each time when IVF might give you a better chance sooner. Insist on honest advice about whether IUI suits your diagnosis, a clear count of how many cycles are realistic, and the full cost of travelling for each one. Sometimes the cheaper looking option is the more expensive path to a baby.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is IUI cheaper abroad?

Often a little. A cycle is frequently quoted from about €400 to €1,600 abroad, against roughly £800 to £1,800 privately in the UK. Because a single cycle is already cheap, travel can cancel out much of the saving.

How many IUI cycles will I need?

It varies, and several cycles are often needed because success per cycle is lower than IVF. The total cost across cycles is what matters most.

Is IUI better value than IVF?

It depends on your diagnosis. For some situations IVF gives a much better chance, so repeated IUI can cost more in the end. Ask for honest advice on which suits you.

Does donor sperm cost more?

Yes. Using donor sperm raises the cost and adds screening and matching, and the rules and waiting times differ by country, so check them before travelling.

Is IUI safe?

It carries fewer risks than IVF, but any mild stimulation brings a small risk of multiple pregnancy, and a failed cycle still carries an emotional cost.
