Treatment in Pune, weighed honestly.

A large, education and technology hub in Maharashtra with serious private hospitals, a calmer feel than Mumbai, and a long flight from the West. How it works, and how to choose safely. We never name a clinic.

Quick answer

Should you go to Pune?

Pune is one of India's larger cities and a notable medical centre in Maharashtra, the same state as Mumbai. It has large private hospitals, several with NABH and in some cases JCI accreditation, treating both Indian and international patients at a fraction of Western prices. For travellers from Europe and North America it is a long flight, usually via Mumbai or Delhi, so distance and follow up, not skill, are the things to weigh.

Any cost figures are indicative, dated June 2026, and vary widely by case and provider. They are a guide, not a quote. The distance also adds real cost in flights, a longer stay, and any return trip.

How it works here

Real hospitals, real distance.

India has a large private healthcare sector built around international patients, with two main quality marks to look for. NABH is the national hospital accreditation, and a smaller number of hospitals also hold JCI accreditation, the international benchmark. Pune sits within this system as a major centre, with large private hospitals offering broad specialty care, dedicated international patient desks, interpreters, and help with travel and accommodation.

The expertise at the better hospitals is genuine, which is exactly why distance and continuity of care, rather than skill, are the things to think hardest about. India offers an electronic medical visa for treatment, and English is widely spoken in private hospitals. The harder issues are the long journey, recovery far from home, and arranging any follow up or revision once you are back. Verify the hospital's accreditation and the treating doctor's registration directly rather than taking either on trust.

How to choose safely here

The Pune checks.

A good hospital is not a substitute for vetting the specific doctor and weighing the distance honestly.

Verify the hospital accreditation

Look for NABH accreditation, and JCI for the larger international hospitals. Both can be checked on public registers before you commit.

Confirm the doctor's registration and experience

Ask for registration with the National Medical Commission or relevant State Medical Council, and for specialist training in the procedure you need.

Plan for the distance

This is a long journey. Build in enough time before flying home, follow advice on reducing clot risk on the flight, and accept that a complication or revision means another trip.

Get it in writing, and plan the follow up

Confirm the doctor, the plan, the all in price, and the billing currency in writing. Agree how aftercare and revisions work once you are home, where standard travel insurance rarely covers elective care.

Before you fly

The practical essentials.

Visa

Most visitors, including from the UK and EU, need a visa for India. An electronic medical visa exists for those travelling for treatment. Always confirm the current rule for your passport.

Flights

Pune has its own airport, though many international travellers connect through Mumbai or Delhi. It is a long haul flight from Europe and North America. Plan recovery time before flying home.

Language

Marathi and Hindi are widely used, and English is common in business and in private hospitals built for international patients, often with interpreters.

Currency

The Indian rupee. Some international hospitals quote in US dollars or pounds, so fix the figure and the currency in writing.

Insurance

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective treatment or its complications, and the distance raises the cost of any emergency. Read the policy and consider dedicated cover.

When to go

The cooler, drier months from roughly November to February are generally more comfortable for recovery than the monsoon or the peak heat.

Get Matched with a vetted clinic

Tell us your plan. We do the rest.

Send one brief and we match you to vetted clinics in Pune that meet the standards above. They return tailored quotes with plan, timings, and transfers. You choose, with no pressure.

Free and no obligation. Accredited clinics only. We never sell your details.

We reply within two working days. Your details are never sold.

How we make money: the guides are free and no clinic can pay to be named, ranked or recommended, we never name clinics. Get Matched is an optional service that helps keep the guides free and independent of any one clinic; using it is always your choice and you are never charged. How this works.

Common questions

Pune, straight answers.

Is it safe to have treatment in Pune?

At a NABH or JCI accredited hospital with a registered, experienced doctor, care can be very good. The risk lives at unaccredited facilities and with unverified credentials, so verification is the key step, alongside planning for the distance.

How much can I save?

For many procedures Indian pricing is a fraction of UK, US or Gulf private pricing, often a half to a third or less. The true total depends on the procedure, the hospital, and your travel and stay. These are indicative figures, not a quote.

Do I need a visa for India?

Most visitors need a visa, and India offers an electronic medical visa for those travelling for treatment. Confirm the current requirement for your nationality before booking anything.

How do I check a hospital is legitimate?

Look for NABH accreditation, and JCI at the larger hospitals, on public registers. Confirm the treating doctor's registration, and get the plan and price in writing before you travel.

What if I have a complication at home?

Plan it in advance, knowing a return means another long flight. Agree how follow up and revisions are handled before you travel, carry a full written record of what was done, and check whether you need dedicated complications cover.
