Implants are permanent structure. Filler and some transferred fat fade. A good result looks like better balance, not a different face.
Quick answer

When do you see the real result?

Most people look presentable in about two weeks, but the midface keeps settling for months. Around ninety percent of swelling is gone by two months and the final contour is usually clear by about six months. Solid implants are a permanent addition, while transferred fat partly resorbs and filler is temporary, so how long the result lasts depends on the method.

These are typical timelines, reviewed July 2025 and drawn from plastic surgery sources. Healing varies by person, method, and how closely aftercare is followed. Nothing here is a promise of a specific result.

What the result looks like over time

The midface settles slowly.

Early on the cheeks look swollen and a little overdone. The natural result you keep takes months to appear.

In the first weeks the cheeks are swollen, possibly bruised, and can look fuller than the final result. This is normal and temporary. As swelling drops the contour softens and a more natural shape emerges. Most people are comfortable in public around two weeks, but the final shape is not clear until residual swelling resolves over the following months.

Cheek augmentation adds projection and structure to the midface. It does not lift sagging skin, improve skin texture, or stop ageing, which is why some people consider it alongside other treatments. An honest result looks like better balance and a fresher face, not a different one.

How long it lasts. Solid implants are designed to be a permanent addition, though they can be removed or revised if needed. Fat transfer relies on some of the moved fat surviving, so part of it resorbs in the first months and a touch up is sometimes needed. Filler is temporary and is gradually broken down, so it needs repeating. Ageing continues whatever the method.

The recovery timeline

Healing, week by week.

01

First few days

Swelling and bruising peak around 72 hours. If incisions are inside the mouth you keep to a soft diet and gentle mouth rinses, rest with your head elevated, and watch for any sign of infection.

02

1 to 2 weeks

Most people return to non physical work around a week. About eighty percent of swelling typically settles by two weeks, though the cheeks still feel tight and numb in places.

03

2 to 8 weeks

Strenuous exercise is usually avoided until cleared, often a few weeks. Residual swelling keeps easing and the contour starts to look more natural.

04

2 to 6 months

Around ninety percent of swelling is gone by two months and the final shape is usually clear by about six months, when the result can be properly judged.

The follow up problem

An infection, an implant that has shifted, or a concern about symmetry is harder to manage once you are home from abroad. Agree before you travel how reviews and any revision will be handled, and keep your operation notes.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective surgery or its complications. Read any policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you travel.

Aftercare that protects the result

The work after surgery.

Good aftercare does not change the surgery, but it protects healing and the result you are left with.

Mouth care and diet

If incisions are inside the mouth, keep it clean with the rinses you are given and eat a soft diet at first. Good oral hygiene lowers the risk of infection, which is the complication that most often threatens an implant.

Rest and position

Rest with your head elevated, avoid pressure on the cheeks, and avoid bending and straining in the early days. This helps swelling settle and reduces the chance of disturbing the implant before it is secure.

Activity and lifestyle

Avoid strenuous exercise and contact activities until cleared, usually a few weeks, so the implant settles in place. Not smoking supports healing. Gentle walking from early on is fine and helps circulation.

What to watch for

Spreading redness, increasing pain, fever, a bad taste or discharge in the mouth, or a sudden change in shape can signal a complication and need prompt medical review rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

When will I see the final result?

Most people look presentable in about two weeks. Around ninety percent of swelling is gone by two months and the final contour is usually clear by about six months.

How long does cheek augmentation last?

It depends on the method. Solid implants are designed to be permanent, transferred fat partly resorbs and may need a touch up, and filler is temporary and needs repeating. Ageing continues whatever the method.

Will it look natural?

A well judged result looks like better facial balance, not a different face. Early fullness is swelling and settles. Overly large implants or too much filler can look unnatural, which is why method and amount matter.

What aftercare matters most?

Keeping the mouth clean if incisions are inside it, eating soft food at first, resting with your head elevated, avoiding strain, and reporting any sign of infection early. These protect healing and the result.

What if I am unhappy with the result abroad?

Adjusting or removing an implant means a further operation, which is harder to arrange once you are home. Agree the revision policy and who pays before you travel, and keep your operation notes.
