Gum contouring, the questions that matter.

A careful clinic answers every question below in writing without flinching. Here are the six that separate sound gum reshaping from a risky deal, and the red flags that should stop you. We never name a clinic.

Quick answer

What should I ask a clinic?

Ask whether the gum contouring is to treat a health problem or purely cosmetic, how much gum will be removed and whether your gums are healthy first, and whether a scalpel or a laser is used. Then ask if any bone needs reshaping, who carries out the procedure and with what training, and what the price covers along with the healing time and follow up.

A clinic that answers these plainly and in writing is the one to trust. Pressure to remove gum for a quick smile change with no assessment of gum health is a warning sign, since the tissue does not grow back. This is general information, not medical advice.

How to choose and what to ask

Six questions before you pay.

A safe clinic answers all six without flinching and puts the answers in writing. Use them to judge any clinic you are sent, wherever it is. We never name clinics.

1
Is this for health or purely cosmetic?
Gum reshaping can treat overgrown or diseased gum, or simply even out a gummy smile. Ask which applies to you, because a cosmetic change to healthy gums is an elective choice you should weigh carefully.
2
How much gum will be removed, and is it reversible?
Removed gum tissue does not grow back. Ask exactly how much will be taken, whether it can leave tooth roots exposed, and to see the planned result first, since the change is permanent.
3
Will you use a scalpel or a laser, and why?
Both are used. A laser often means less bleeding and quicker healing, while a scalpel may suit larger cases. Ask which the clinic uses and the reason, rather than assuming one is always better.
4
Does any bone need reshaping too?
Sometimes a longer tooth look needs bone reshaped under the gum, a bigger procedure with a longer recovery, rather than gum alone. Ask whether your case needs this and how it changes the healing and the cost.
5
Who performs it and with what training?
Ask the name and qualification of the clinician, whether they are a dentist or a gum specialist, and whether you can verify them on a public register. The result depends on their judgement of how much to remove.
6
What is in the price, and how does follow up work?
Ask for an itemised price, the expected healing time, and what happens if you have pain or the gum heals unevenly once you are home. Plan who would review you near home before you travel.
Warning signs

The red flags that should stop you.

No check of gum health

Reshaping gums without first checking for gum disease or assessing the tissue is a reason to look elsewhere. Healthy foundations come before any cosmetic change.

The permanence is downplayed

If a clinic glosses over the fact that removed gum does not grow back, or will not show you the planned result first, you are committing blind to a change you cannot undo.

A vague, all in price

A headline figure that hides whether bone work, follow up, or any related treatment is included is not a real quote. If the clinic will not itemise it, walk away.

Get Matched with a vetted clinic

Ask the right questions, of vetted clinics.

Send one brief and we route it to vetted clinics that answer honestly about how much gum is removed, the method, any bone work, and follow up. You choose, with no pressure.

Free and no obligation. Accredited clinics only. We never sell your details.

We reply within two working days. Your details are never sold.

How we make money: the guides are free and no clinic can pay to be named, ranked or recommended. We never name clinics. Get Matched is an optional service that helps keep the guides free and independent of any one clinic; using it is always your choice and you are never charged. How this works.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Does gum grow back after contouring?

No. Gum tissue that is removed does not grow back, so the change is permanent. That is why it matters to ask how much will be taken and to see the planned result before you agree.

How long does gum contouring take to heal?

Most people recover within one to two weeks, with some swelling and soreness in the first few days. Laser treatment often heals a little faster. Ask the clinic for the timeline for your specific case.

Is it painful?

It is usually done under local anaesthetic, so it should not hurt during the procedure. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is common and is generally managed with simple pain relief, but follow your clinician's advice.

Is laser always better than a scalpel?

Not necessarily. A laser can mean less bleeding and quicker healing, but a scalpel may suit larger cases or where bone is reshaped. Ask the clinic which they use and why it fits your case.

What if the gum heals unevenly after I get home?

Ask in advance what the clinic would do, who pays, and how it would be handled from a distance, and line up a clinician near home who could review you. Keep your records to share with them.
