Treatment in Turkey, weighed honestly.

The world's most booked medical travel destination, with the highest ceiling and one of the lowest floors. How it works, what it costs, and how to stay near the top. We never name a clinic.

Quick answer

Should you go to Turkey?

Turkey treated around 1.5 million international patients in 2024 and holds more than 50 JCI accredited hospitals, among the most of any country. For many procedures it costs broadly a half to a third of UK private pricing. The catch is that quality varies enormously, so the work is in choosing a properly accredited clinic, not the country.

Cost figures here are indicative and dated June 2026. They are a guide to the broad picture, not a quote, and the real total depends on the procedure, the clinic, and your travel and stay.

How it works here

The case for Turkey, and the caution.

No country has scaled private medical care for international patients quite like Turkey, and that cuts both ways. The ceiling is as high as anywhere in Europe, while the floor is lower than almost anywhere. The system is regulated. Since 2017, healthcare facilities and intermediaries serving international patients must hold a Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorization, which requires multilingual support, transparent pricing, informed consent in the patient's language, and protocols for managing complications and follow up.

In practice, the best clinics employ named, registered doctors, run their own facilities, and arrange the whole trip, from airport transfer and hotel to translation and after care. English is widely spoken in clinics built for international patients. Direct flights are frequent and short, roughly four hours from London. The honest caution is that some operators, especially in the busiest cities, work outside these rules, so verification matters more here than almost anywhere.

How to choose safely here

The Turkey specific checks.

The same honesty applies wherever you go, but a few checks matter more here because of the scale of the market and the cheap end within it.

Verify the authorisation and accreditation

Check the clinic holds the Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorization, and for hospitals look for JCI accreditation. Both appear on public registers you can search before you book.

Confirm a licensed doctor does the surgery

Turkish law requires a physician to perform surgical steps such as incisions and extractions. So called ghost surgery, where technicians operate, is illegal but does happen. Ask precisely which steps the named surgeon performs.

Be wary of the cheapest end

Reporting suggests a meaningful share of clinics in the busiest cities operate without proper licensing. A price far below the rest of the market, and pressure to book quickly, are the clearest warning signs.

Get it in writing, and plan the follow up

Confirm the surgeon, the plan, the all in price, and the billing currency in writing. Agree how aftercare, any guarantee, and revisions would work once you are back home, where standard travel insurance rarely covers elective care.

Before you fly

The practical essentials.

Visa

Many nationalities, including UK and EU, can enter visa free for up to 90 days. Always confirm the current rule for your passport.

Flights

Around four hours from London, with frequent direct services to the main cities.

Language

Turkish is the national language. English is widely spoken in clinics built for international patients, often with other languages on request.

Currency

The Turkish lira. Many international clinics quote in pounds or euros, so fix the figure and currency in writing.

Insurance

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective treatment or its complications. Read the policy and consider dedicated cover.

When to go

Spring and autumn are milder and more comfortable for recovery than the peak summer heat.

Common questions

Turkey, straight answers.

Is treatment in Turkey safe?

At a properly accredited and authorised clinic with named, registered doctors, care can match Western Europe. Turkey holds more than 50 JCI accredited hospitals. The risk lives at the cheap, high volume end, so verification is the key step.

How much can I save?

For many procedures the indicative saving against UK private pricing is broadly a half to a third, for similar materials. The true total depends on the procedure, the clinic, and your travel and stay. These are indicative figures, not a quote.

How do I check a clinic is legitimate?

Look for the Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorization and, for hospitals, JCI accreditation, both on public registers. Confirm a licensed doctor performs the surgery and get the plan and price in writing.

Do I need a visa?

Many visitors, including from the UK and EU, can enter visa free for up to 90 days, but rules change, so confirm the current requirement for your nationality before travelling.

What if I have a complication at home?

Plan it in advance. Agree how follow up and revisions are handled before you travel, and check whether you need dedicated medical complications cover, since standard travel insurance usually excludes elective treatment.
