A simpler and cheaper treatment than IVF, but lower in success per cycle. What it really costs, when it suits you, and how to choose safely. We never name a clinic.
Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a simpler and cheaper treatment than IVF. Prepared sperm is placed directly into the womb around the time of ovulation, sometimes with mild medication to encourage egg release. In the UK an all in cycle including tests and medication is commonly quoted around 3,500 to 4,600 pounds, and the insemination itself is cheaper than that headline when bought alone. The honest point worth making first is that IUI has a lower success rate per cycle than IVF, so for some causes of infertility it is the right first step and for others it mainly delays the more effective treatment.
Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed September 2025, and vary by whether medication or donor sperm is used and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.
In intrauterine insemination a semen sample is washed and concentrated in the laboratory, then the best sperm are placed directly into the womb through a fine catheter at the time of ovulation. It can be done in a natural cycle or with mild ovarian stimulation and ovulation tracking. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes, needs no sedation, and feels similar to a cervical smear. It is less invasive, less costly, and lower in success per attempt than IVF.
Who it tends to suit. Couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor problems, or where intercourse is difficult, single people and same sex couples using donor sperm, and people who prefer to try a simpler treatment before IVF. It needs at least one open fallopian tube and reasonable sperm quality.
Who it tends not to suit. People with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, significant male factor infertility, low ovarian reserve, or where the female partner is older and time is short, as repeated IUI cycles can delay more effective IVF. A proper assessment should decide which treatment fits.
IUI is far cheaper than IVF because it needs no egg collection or laboratory fertilisation. The headline price often excludes the pre treatment tests, the sperm preparation, any medication, and donor sperm if used, so the all in figure is higher. Abroad the saving comes mainly from lower facility costs.
Indicative ranges, reviewed September 2025. Not a quote. Because each cycle has a lower chance than IVF, ask how many IUI cycles the clinic advises before moving to IVF, so you can compare the real total cost of each route.

IUI is low risk and minimally invasive. The main risks come from any medication used to stimulate ovulation rather than from the insemination itself.
If medication is used to stimulate the ovaries, more than one egg may be released, raising the chance of twins or more. Careful monitoring of the response lowers this risk.
When stimulation medication is used, mild OHSS is possible, though severe OHSS is much less common than in IVF because the doses are lower.
Passing the catheter can rarely cause infection, and some women have brief cramping or light spotting afterwards. Serious problems are uncommon.
The chance of success in any single IUI cycle is modest and falls with age. Many people need several cycles, and some move on to IVF, which is more effective for many causes.
IUI is timed precisely to ovulation, so travel has to fit a narrow window that can shift, and a trip may be wasted if the cycle is cancelled. If medication is used, any reaction can appear after you return. Plan for flexible dates and agree how follow up will work.
A safe clinic answers all six in writing without flinching. Vague answers, pressure to book quickly, and prices far below the market are the warning signs that matter most. We do not name clinics, so use these to judge any you are sent.
Your cycle is monitored, sometimes with mild medication, to pinpoint ovulation. Scans or ovulation tests guide the timing.
Prepared sperm is placed into the womb in a quick painless visit. You can usually return to normal activity straight away.
A pregnancy test follows about two weeks later. There is no recovery period to speak of.
If a cycle does not work, another can often follow soon. After a few attempts, many people consider IVF.
IUI needs little aftercare, but a cycle can be cancelled at short notice and timing is tight, which is harder to manage when travelling. Agree before you travel how the cycle will be tracked, how flexible the dates are, and who you contact if you have any concern once home.
Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective procedures or their complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.
