The one honest thing
A lip lift leaves a small permanent scar at the base of the nose. It usually fades to a fine line, but it is real and the change cannot simply be reversed.
Quick answer

Is it worth going abroad?

A lip lift abroad commonly costs a half to a third of UK private pricing, with indicative ranges from around £1,250. It is a small operation, often under local anaesthetic, that shortens a long upper lip and shows a little more of the upper teeth. The honest point is that it leaves a permanent scar at the base of the nose, and although it usually fades well, the change is not easily reversed.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed October 2025, and vary by the technique, whether it is done under local or general anaesthetic, and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it is

The procedure, in plain terms.

A lip lift shortens the distance between the base of the nose and the top of the lip, which can lengthen with age, to give a fuller looking upper lip and a little more visible upper teeth. The most common technique, a bullhorn lip lift, removes a strip of skin just under the nose and hides the scar in the natural creases there. It is usually done under local anaesthetic as a day case and is a smaller operation than most facial surgery.

Who it tends to suit. People with a long upper lip or a thin looking upper lip who want a subtle change, are in good health, and accept a small permanent scar under the nose.

Who it tends not to suit. People wanting the volume of fillers rather than a structural change, anyone expecting no scar at all, current heavy smokers who will not stop, and those who would not accept a permanent and not easily reversible result.

What it really costs

The price, honestly.

Abroad, a lip lift commonly runs a half to a third of UK private pricing, largely because of lower labour and facility costs, not lower quality by default. Price is driven by the technique, whether it is done under local or general anaesthetic, and the experience of the surgeon.

Indicative ranges, reviewed October 2025. Not a quote. A headline price far below the rest of the market is usually a warning sign, not a bargain.

Risks and safety

What can go wrong.

A lip lift is a small operation and serious complications are uncommon when an experienced facial surgeon performs it. The risk people care about most is the scar, which is permanent even though it usually fades to a fine line.

A permanent scar

There is a scar at the base of the nose. It is well hidden and usually fades to a faint line, but it is permanent, and in some people it heals more visibly than hoped.

Over elevation

Removing too much skin can show too much tooth or leave the lip looking unnatural, which is hard to undo. A conservative approach is safer.

Numbness and stiffness

Temporary numbness or a tight feeling of the upper lip is common for a few weeks to a few months and usually settles.

Bleeding and infection

Bleeding and infection can occur but are uncommon at a clean, accredited clinic and usually treatable when caught early.

The risk specific to travelling

The scar matures over up to six months, long after you are home. Review or revision is harder from abroad, so agree the aftercare and revision terms in writing before you travel.

How to choose and what to ask

Six questions before you pay.

A safe clinic answers all six in writing without flinching, and a careful surgeon takes a conservative amount and explains the scar. Pressure to book quickly and prices far below the market are warning signs. We do not name clinics, so use these to judge any you are sent.

1
Who exactly will perform my surgery?
Get the name of the operating surgeon, confirm they are licensed, and ask how often they perform lip lifts specifically.
2
Where exactly will the scar be, and how will you hide it?
Ask to see where the incision sits under the nose and how the scar is concealed in the natural creases.
3
Is the facility licensed and accredited?
Ask for the national licence and, for clinics, recognised accreditation. Both can usually be checked on a public register.
4
How much will you remove, and will it look natural?
A careful surgeon takes a conservative amount to avoid showing too much tooth or an unnatural look, and explains the expected change.
5
What does the all in price cover?
Confirm in writing whether the anaesthetic, facility, medication, and follow up are included, and what a revision would cost if one is needed.
6
How will follow up and revision work?
Because the scar matures over months, ask how reviews happen once you are home, who decides if a revision is warranted, and who pays for it.
Aftercare and the follow up problem

Recovery, and what happens once you are home.

01

First days

Expect swelling and bruising around the upper lip and nose, with stitches in place. Cold packs and keeping the head raised help.

02

Days 5 to 7

Stitches usually come out around five to seven days and most people return to a desk job, although swelling is still visible.

03

Weeks 2 to 6

Swelling settles and the lip starts to look natural. Strenuous exercise is usually avoided for around six weeks.

04

Up to 6 months

The scar matures and fades to a fine line over up to six months, and any numbness usually resolves.

The follow up problem

Because the scar matures over months, how it heals is only clear well after the trip. Local doctors can be reluctant to revise another clinic's work, so agree the review schedule, revision terms, and any guarantee in writing before you travel.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic procedures or their complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is a lip lift abroad safe?

At an accredited clinic with an experienced facial surgeon, outcomes can match home and serious complications are uncommon. The surgeon's skill with the scar matters most. This guide helps you judge any clinic you are sent to.

Will I have a visible scar?

There is a permanent scar at the base of the nose, hidden in the natural creases. It usually fades to a faint line, but it is real and in some people heals more visibly.

How is it different from lip fillers?

A lip lift is surgery that shortens and reshapes the upper lip for a lasting change, while fillers add temporary volume. They do different things, and a lip lift is not easily reversed.

How long is the recovery?

Most people return to a desk job in five to seven days, with swelling settling over a few weeks and the scar maturing over up to six months.

What if something goes wrong once I am home?

Review and revision are harder to arrange from abroad, and standard travel insurance rarely covers elective surgery. Settle the aftercare and revision terms in writing before you travel.
