Quick answer

Is it worth going abroad?

Buccal fat removal abroad often costs a half to a third of UK private pricing, with indicative ranges from around £1,200. It is a short procedure, but it is permanent and easy to overdo, and the lower cheek can look gaunt as the face naturally ages. For many people the honest answer is to be cautious, because this is a change that cannot be undone.

Costs below are indicative ranges, reviewed December 2025, and vary by whether it is done alone or with other facial work, and what a package includes. They are not a quote and not a promise of a result.

What it is

The procedure, in plain terms.

Buccal fat removal takes out a small pad of fat from the lower cheek to create a slimmer, more sculpted look. The surgeon works through a small incision inside the mouth, so there is no visible scar, and removes part of the buccal fat pad. It is usually quick and done under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. The change is permanent, and because the face loses volume with age, a result that looks balanced now can look hollow in later years.

Who it tends to suit. People in good general health with naturally full lower cheeks and realistic expectations, who understand the result is permanent. Those who want a subtle refinement rather than a dramatic hollowing tend to be the happiest.

Who it tends not to suit. People with naturally slim or narrow faces, anyone at risk of looking gaunt with age, those chasing a trend, and people with signs of body image distress. If your face is likely to thin naturally over time, an honest surgeon will advise against it.

What it really costs

The price, honestly.

Abroad, buccal fat removal commonly runs a half to a third of UK private pricing, largely because of lower labour and facility costs, not lower quality by default. Price is driven by whether it is done alone or alongside other facial work, and the experience of the surgeon.

Indicative ranges, reviewed December 2025. Not a quote. Buccal fat removal is cosmetic and not covered by the NHS or private insurance, so most people pay privately.

Risks and safety

What can go wrong.

Buccal fat removal is a small procedure but not a trivial one. It is permanent, it sits near important structures in the cheek, and the most common harm is an aesthetic one, removing too much. The risks deserve honest thought before you commit.

Nerve injury

Branches of the facial nerve run through this area. Injury is uncommon but can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in part of the face, which is occasionally lasting.

Salivary duct injury

The duct that drains saliva into the mouth runs near the fat pad. Injury is very rare but can cause a leak, swelling, or a fluid collection that needs treatment.

Bleeding and infection

Bleeding and bruising are usually minor, and infection is uncommon at a clean, accredited facility. Spreading redness, swelling, or fever needs prompt review.

Removing too much

If too much fat is taken out, the lower cheek can look unnaturally hollow, and this gaunt look tends to worsen with age. This is the most common source of long term dissatisfaction and it cannot easily be reversed.

The risk specific to travelling

The final result takes up to three months to settle, so an over hollowed look may only become clear long after you are home. Correction is difficult and review is harder from abroad, so be sure before you travel.

How to choose and what to ask

Six questions before you pay.

A safe clinic answers all six in writing without flinching, and a careful surgeon will sometimes advise against the procedure. Pressure to book quickly and prices far below the market are warning signs. We do not name clinics, so use these to judge any you are sent.

1
Who exactly will perform my surgery?
Get the name of the operating surgeon, not just the clinic. Confirm their training, that they are licensed, and how often they perform facial surgery.
2
Is this right for my face, honestly?
A good surgeon assesses whether your face will thin with age and may advise against removal. Beware anyone who agrees to it without examining you properly.
3
Is the facility licensed and accredited?
Ask for the national licence and, for clinics, recognised accreditation. Both can usually be checked on a public register.
4
How much will you remove, and why?
Because over removal is the main regret, ask how the surgeon decides how much to take and how they avoid leaving you hollow.
5
What does the all in price cover?
Confirm in writing whether the facility, anaesthetic, medication, and follow up are included, and what any correction would cost if one is needed.
6
How will follow up work, and can this be reversed?
Ask how reviews happen once you are home and be clear that the result is permanent and difficult to correct, so any guarantee has limits.
Aftercare and the follow up problem

Recovery, and what happens once you are home.

01

First days

Expect swelling, mild bruising, and tightness in the cheeks. A liquid then soft food diet is usual at first, and good mouth hygiene helps the inside incision heal.

02

Week 1

Swelling peaks then begins to ease and many people return to desk work. Strenuous activity is best avoided, and the cheeks still look fuller than the final result.

03

Weeks 2 to 6

Swelling settles further and the slimmer shape starts to show. It is normal for the result to look exaggerated at first while fluid resolves.

04

Up to 3 months

The final settled result appears by around three months. Only now can you fairly judge the outcome, and any over hollowing becomes apparent.

The follow up problem

Because the result settles over three months and is permanent, a hollow or uneven outcome may only become clear long after the trip. Correction is difficult and local doctors are often reluctant to take on another clinic's surgery, so be certain and agree review terms in writing before you travel.

Insurance and complication cover

Standard travel insurance rarely covers elective cosmetic procedures or their complications. Read the policy closely and consider dedicated medical complications cover before you book.

Common questions

The things everyone asks.

Is buccal fat removal abroad safe?

At an accredited facility with an experienced surgeon, the procedure itself is generally low risk. The bigger danger is an aesthetic one, removing too much. This guide helps you judge any clinic you are sent to.

Can buccal fat removal be reversed?

Not easily. The fat that is removed does not grow back, and correcting an over hollowed cheek is difficult, sometimes needing fat transfer. Treat it as permanent.

Will it make me look older later?

It can. The face loses volume with age, so a result that looks balanced now may look gaunt in later years. A careful surgeon factors this in and may advise against it.

Is there a visible scar?

No. The incision is inside the mouth, so there is no external scar. Good mouth hygiene helps it heal.

What if something goes wrong once I am home?

Review and correction are harder to arrange from abroad, and standard travel insurance rarely covers elective surgery. Settle the aftercare terms in writing before you travel, and be sure before you commit.
